Devon libraries are sharing the national enthusiasm for the World Cup by organising football-linked activities and displays. At Newton Abbot library the children in Newts – Newton Abbot Library Group – run by librarian Matt Stead, have put up a display featuring two rival teams. One team consists of the all-time greatest 11 female authors, facing their opponents, the greatest male writers. The teams are carefully positioned on a football pitch, and staff have put up a wall chart to fill in as the tournament progresses. There is also a World Cup chart to be completed at Kingskerswell library, and flags to celebrate the football tournament and the Queen's birthday. Kingskerswell has a good display of adult and children's football books. Boys are targeted by Kingsteignton library, where football books, both fiction and non-fiction, are spread out in a display designed to tempt the lads into picking up a book and taking it home to enjoy. Devon County Council executive member Cllr Sheila Hobden said: 'The World Cup is a great opportunity for Devon CC libraries to invite soccer enthusiasts both young and old to take advantage of the many books and DVDs we have in stock on a football theme.'
