The Alice Cross Centre at Teignmouth is delighted to be back up and running. We have a vision in which we aim ‘to be the Community Centre of choice for improved health and wellbeing for all’ and want to share the great opportunities at the centre with you.

We offer friendship, warmth and community and are always on the lookout for new and enthusiastic volunteers to support our work in any way they can!

Sheila, Terry and Beryl at Ed’s birthday party!

Why not join our community of friendly, happy, partying volunteers!

We have not been standing still during lockdown! In the last few months we have:

1. trained a group of volunteers to support those who have suffered bereavement, looking to improve listening skills, and have introduced a new Bereavement and Grief Support group;

2. we are offering both drop-in sessions and Computing for Beginners to help with digital needs and connectivity in the future;

3. ‘Talk and walk’ volunteer buddies walk with clients to help people begin to venture out and gain some of the physical confidence which they may have lost in the last 18 months.

The Centre is alive again! The Memory Café, lunch club - including social dining with transport to pick up any clients who need it – line dancing, wiggles and giggles, bridge club, table tennis, chess club and meal deliveries are running successfully, with some 200 people using the Centre each week. Also based at the Centre, there is Tai Chi, various yoga classes, social chat drop-in sessions, volunteering opportunities for young people through the Coastal Youth Action (CYA) project, and drumming for fun! We are back up and running fully again, with our usual positivity and energy!

We are aiming to get back to the 400 or 500 people who were attending pre-lockdown, so if you or somebody you know might like to join a group or activity, or join our amazing group of volunteers, please do get in touch using one of the methods below. Our monthly newsletter, containing more details, is available on our website or can be collected from the Centre, from Home Direct or Scene and Heard music shop; let us know if you would like to be added to our e-mailing list! 60s and 70s party goes with a bang!

On Saturday, 18 September, we were thrilled to host our first social event in a very long time!

The 60’s and 70’s themed party was great fun and a huge success. Music was provided by The Teigns, who really took us back to the 60’s and 70’s.

Come and join us to sing some classic favourites with The Teigns on 25 October 11 and 25, at our weekly Monday Meet and Music session between 10.30am and 12pm. All are welcome. The Teigns are in the Main Hall on the second and fourth Monday and Diantha is here on the other sessions.

There was a fantastic array of wigs and glamorous outfits from the era, with Abba and Elvis making several appearances. Dancing and singing soon got everybody into the swing of things! Julia Street, General Manager, said “It’s been brilliant to open up for an evening event after being unable to for so long. A huge thank you to a wonderful gang of volunteers who helped run the event and to the amazing Teigns singing group for their time and support. We look forward to their Beatles night, scheduled for 2November 27.“.

Watch out for future events on the horizon! Our monthly newsletter, containing more details, is available on our website or can be collected from the Centre, Home Direct or Scene and Heard music shop; let us know if you would like to be added to our e-mailing list!

Contact details are given below. We would love to hear from you if you would like to join any of our classes or activities or even join our wonderful team of volunteers.
