COUNCILLORS are demanding a crack down on delivery lorries which flout regulations in the pedestrianised Teignmouth Triangles.
Most vehicles are banned from entering the area during the day, but trucks are often ignoring the ban.
Cllr Sylvia Russell told a town council meeting that lorries were passing close to al-fresco diners at pavement tables, 'belching out fumes', and not turning engines off when delivering.
'We are trying to promote a cafe society in the town centre and these vehicles are prompting adverse comments from visitors.
'I have seen lorries come in just to pick up empty boxes.'
The mayor, Cllr David Cox, thought that the CCTV surveillance cameras should be utilised to identify and report errant drivers to their firms, but town clerk Dave Tickell had heard that drivers were being assured that companies would pay for any tickets they collected.
Mr Tickell believed that Teignbridge enforcement officers had been reluctant to act against the trucks in the past, but the county council had now confirmed that the regulations were perfectly legal and action could be taken against offenders.
Cllr Russell added that there was also a danger to children running around the pedestrian area, and the mayor declared: 'We have to get tough with these drivers.'
