A man aged 91 from Ilsington, locally named as Douglas Hall, died on Saturday after the car he was travelling in was involved in a collision near Newton Abbot.
A 76-year-old woman thought to be the dead man's wife, who was driving the Chevrolet Matiz, was yesterday still being treated at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital after being airlifted from the scene.
She was said to be in a critical but stable condition after undergoing surgery for serious chest injuries.
A 44-year-old man who was driving the other car, a grey MG ZT, was unharmed and arrested at the crash site on suspicion of dangerous driving.
The incident happened on the A382 near Forches Cross about 3.25pm.
Senior investigating officer MPS Olly Tayler has appealed for witnesses.
He said: 'We would like to speak to anyone who saw the collision or who saw a grey Rover MG ZT on the A382 between Trago Mills and Stover School at the time of the collision to please come forward.'
The MG driver, said to be local, has been bailed to appear at Torquay Police Station in June.
