WORK on the former Conservative Club and Teign Sport Social Club, which started last February, has now come to an end with a smart block of flats the end product.

Teignmouth mayor, Cllr Dvaid Weekes, opened the block on Tuesday.

Brian Wedgwood was persuaded to buy the building two years ago by architect Brian Godfrey, who had a vision of what the building could be.

It was designed in 1840 originally to be a theatre.

'It was Mr Godfrey's imagination and foresight that twisted my arm on this place,' said Mr Wedgwood.

The project, in Quay Road, has had its fair share of problems but considering the age of the building, pre-1900s, and it being finished just four months past the target all were quite pleased.

'The major headache was due to the building being in a conservation area and although it is not a listed building we did have to conform to certain rules,' said Mr Wedgwood.

The 13 flats have been sold by Bradleys Estate Agents and the owners move in soon.
