A MEMORIAL seat for a well-known Teignmouth fisherman and boatman has been lovingly restored at The Point.

Local carpenter and boatman Ricky Cox restored the Fred Sealey memorial seat, funded by Fred’s 95-year-old daughter Eva Lord.

Fred’s grandson Commodore Richard Lord said the seat was purchased in the latter ’70s through funds arranged by Harry Sealey from family members and local boatmen. Constant use and the weather had resulted in it falling into disrepair.

Speaking on behalf of his mother he said: ‘I hope locals and visitors alike will enjoy sitting there and appreciate the beach and river activity, as so many others had done before in the past.’

Ricky Cox said he was pleased to undertake the commission and had often heard Fred Sealey being talked about down at The Point.

Fred Sealey spent his lifetime at The Point as a fisherman and boatman. He was awarded a BEM in 1966 for services to the fishing industry. He died in 1975.
