Drivers are facing misery in Teignmouth for the next five weeks as Transco starts a £53,000 project to replace a gas main in Bitton Park Road.
It involves replacing 100 metres of old metal pipe with new plastic pipe, guaranteeing gas supplies and dramatically cutting down maintenance.
But the work will mean traffic diversions. Transco project manager Graham Jeffrey said: 'We would like to apologise for any inconvenience this
essential safety work may cause. We will be
working weekends and during the evenings and
will make every effort to complete the work as quickly as possible.'
The project will be carried out in two phases: phase one, from First Avenue to opposite 118 Bitton Park Road, will involve two-way traffic lights in Bitton Park Road for the first two weeks of the project.
Phase two begins on Monday, February 24, and will involve three-way traffic lights at the Shaldon Bridge junction and closing the end of Mill Lane. Traffic will be diverted down Coombe Vale Road, into Coombe Park Road, Fourth Avenue, Mill lane, Lower Kingsdown Road and finally in Kingsway.
l Bitton Park residents are only just recovering from major traffic hold-ups caused by Shaldon Bridge refurbishment work
