A retired naval officer from Bovey Traey wants to mark the 60th anniversary of the sinking of a ship bringing service personnel and civilians home from the Far East after the Korean War.

The Empire Windrush's engine blew up but out of 1,500 passengers and crew just four – engineers – died in the initial explosion.

Now Capt Michael Page (right) believes the 'miraculous and disciplined' rescue action staged should be recognised 60 years on.

The rescue made headlines around the world.

Mr Page said:?'A story like that should be told and it is something the military should be proud of.'
