LAST night’s Christmas market in Newton Abbot climaxed with a gas leak scare.

Firefighters were called to Queen Street just before 10pm after a propane cylinder - used by a food trader to heat his victuals on a stove - could not be switched off as he packed away at the end of the fair.

The fire crew responded to the 999 call at 9.40pm. They were able to fit a blanking cap to the temperamental 19kg cylinder to fix the problem.

Advice was then given to the trader.
