Supporters of Teignbridge-based charity Bumala Trust turned out in force to a Hafla that was organised at Ogwell Memorial Hall on Saturday night. The colourful event, which is a celebration of dance, raised more than £400 for the good cause which raises vital funds for orphans in Bumala in North West Kenya. The money gives the opportunity for children to complete their education, which has been disrupted by the death of immediate family members due to HIV/AIDS. At the Hafla, supporters could watch a variety of different dances from tribal to Egyptian and supporters could get up and have a dance themselves. A diverse range of musicians turned up to help make sure the event was a great success, from an Arab drummer to Champagne Julia, who play folk music. 'It was fantastic and a great success,' said Rebecca Larkin, who organised the event for the charity. 'It was bigger and better than the one last year. I think we'll need to find a new venue for next year as we had so many people come along.' 'The money raised will go directly to the orphans that need help.' All those who went along were entered into a special raffle to win a pair of tickets to any Flybe route in Europe. 'We were happy that Flybe gave the tickets. They have also said that they will be supporting the charity in the future,' said Mrs Larkin. The winner was Steve Langler, from Ipplepen, who was thrilled to be picked. 'I really didn't expect to win. My partner supports the charity and asked me to go along. It was a really happy event,' he said. 'We are thinking of using the tickets to go to Malaga next May and we are really happy to win.' Another draw was held during the evening and supporters had the chance to win vouchers for numerous shops and beauty salons in the area including Let's Face It and Catwalk. The Bumala Trust's next fundraising event is a Sing A Long Sunday at The Prospect Chapel, Newton Abbot, on Sunday. Professional singer Yvonne Lawley will entertain the audience with songs from the 1940s through to the 70s. 'I sang in Courtenay Park as Vera Lynn for the VJ Day celebrations and had a great response. I met Janet Desmond, who started the Bumala Trust, and I wanted to do something to help,' said the singer. 'I am looking forward to it and hope to raise some funds for the good cause.' Admission to the event is free, but any donations to the trust will be gratefully received. It starts at 2.30pm.
