Moretonhampstead Sports and Community Centre is holding an Open Evening for people to see what’s on offer at the venue to promote fitness, health and wellbeing.

The centre, a King George V Playing Fields Trust charity run by members of the community, for the community, will be open from 5pm to 8pm on Friday, August 12.

A spokesperson said: ‘Everyone is welcome, there’s plenty of parking and it’s easy to find on the North Bovey Road.

Representatives from some of its associated clubs such as bowls, tennis, cricket, skate and ride, football (including juniors and veterans!) and riding will be available.

There’s a fully equipped advanced-level gym, sports hall that accommodates pilates classes, netball, badminton and functions/special events; fitness blast and indoor cycling, a full bar, two further function rooms used for the Community Church and activities including Flexercise, martial arts and dance; and treatment rooms offering such services as sports massage, chiropody and Source Point acupuncture.

There are classes, sports, activities or services for people of all ages and abilities.

The centre is particularly proud that it currently hosts over 100 young people who are benefiting from the its ethos to encourage fitness and health awareness.

According to Beth Shears, manager at the centre: ‘Alongside our main building which has a variety of rooms and spaces, across two floors, our associated clubs have high standard courts, a skate and ride park, children’s playground, bowling greens and even a riding arena.

‘We also host ‘Dartmoor Camping’ for visitors to pitch their tents on the edge of the playing fields and they can use the indoor toilets and showers.

‘Where else can you find all this in one place?

‘There’s probably no other Sports and Community Centre of this size with this range of services for the community, across Devon – and perhaps the whole of the South West.

‘People tend to think we must be run by the council, but we are a charity, relying largely on volunteers, with just a couple of part-time paid employees.

‘We are grateful that our trustees and volunteers enable us to be open every day of the week, and our service providers ensure that we can offer a variety of sports and services that can benefit everyone.

‘Visitors on August 12 will be able to enjoy a social evening with great prices at the bar!

‘The centre is always looking for more service providers and to extend what it can offer: if you have any ideas, we’d also love to meet you.’
