FOR the first time in its history the 24th annual two hour Sailboarders Fun Sail, on the River Teign above Shaldon Bridge on Sunday, June 18, will include canoeists. They are invited to join the event, which is to raise funds for the RNLI. Assembly is on the King George V playing field, Shaldon and the sail begins at 11.30am. The area has ample car parking, a children's playground and a public house, ideal for all the family to join in the fun. Organiser John Humphreys said numbers of surfboarders taking part had been dwindling and it was decided to boost numbers by inviting the canoeists. The event takes place either side of high water, the sailboarders will be going around a triangular course in the centre of the estuary and the canoeists paddling around a course outside them in the same direction. Several safety boats and rescue canoes will be in attendance. There are RNLI certificates for all entrants, trophies for some and a perpetual cup and trophy to the entrant raising the most money. Sailboard entry forms and more details are available at branches of Bradleys Estate Agents, sponsor of the event, windsurfing shops in the Torbay to Exmouth region, or by contacting Mr Humphreys on 01626 872473. Entry forms for canoes are limited to 50 and are available from canoe clubs in Totnes, Brixham, Paignton and Teignmouth, or by telephoning Ian Johnson on 01626 775919. There is no entrance fee but it is hoped entrants will give a good donation and have a great time.
