BUCKFASTLEIGH residents and visitors found there was plenty to enjoy at the Big Funday last Saturday.

The event, at Buckfastleigh Rangers Football Club, ran all day with children’s sports, games, stalls, inflatables and barbecue, and well into the night with live music.

Darren Greep, one of the organising team, said: ‘It was a successful day, especially as we were competing with lots of local carnivals and fetes. It’s become a big social event in the town.

‘The Big Funday is now a community annual event and we added the dog show for the first time this year, which went really well.

TRADITIONAL

‘A local farmer turned up with a sheep to guess its weight, we had some alpacas too, and traditional games like hook a duck.

‘The Buckfastleigh fire crew attended and raised awareness of traffic collisions and defibrillators. And the stallholders, including food, jewellery, local clubs and charities, all said they had a good day.’

Darren said there were three sets of live music in the evening, and the day and evening were very well attended.

The Funday has become the main fundraiser for the football club. This year’s event made around £2,000 for the Buckfastleigh Rangers Football teams.

The dog show raised money for the Buckfastleigh Firefighters Defibrillator Challenge.

The Cyder Commandos Scooter Club attended to present a cheque for £520 to Devon Air Ambulance, who use the Buckfastleigh football ground as a night landing pad.

Darren added: ‘The ambulance landed on the pitch a couple of nights before the Funday and I was a bit concerned as the tents had already been put up – luckily they were all fine!

‘It was a great day and we’d like to say a big thank you from the football club for the support we got from the town. Without that support we couldn’t do it.’
