POLICE seized five illegally used electric bikes and scooters during a targeted operation across Newton Abbot, Kingsteignton and Kingskerswell.

On Tuesday, July 28, Newton Abbot Neighbourhood PCSO Bailey joined officers from the Torquay Neighbourhood Support Team for Operation Leapstring, a planned initiative aimed at tackling the illegal use of e-bikes and e-scooters on roads and in public places.

Using a combination of plain-clothes and uniformed officers, along with a range of policing tactics, the team stopped and seized two illegal e-bikes and three e-scooters.

The e-bikes were not pedal-assisted and are therefore classed as motor vehicles, meaning they do not comply with UK road traffic legislation for use on public roads or highways.

Police say illegal e-bikes and e-scooters are used by both adults and young people and are often linked to anti-social behaviour and criminality.

Officers also warned that they can pose a significant risk to riders and other members of the public.

Residents considering buying an e-bike or e-scooter for themselves or a child are being urged to familiarise themselves with the law and understand where the vehicles can legally be used before making a purchase.

Police have confirmed that Operation Leapstring will continue across South Devon and Torbay in the coming months as officers target the illegal use of these vehicles.
