A FORMER Newton Abbot-based police officer has been awarded the prestigious Queen's Police Medal in the new year honours.

Sgt Olly Tayler, who worked in the town for six years before leaving his post for another in Ivybridge only last month, secured the accolade for his 'distinguished service' with the Devon and Cornwall constabulary.

The officer, who is expected to collect his 'gong' from the Queen later this year, helped establish a road safety scheme for young drivers which has since won international recognition.
