A DVD of the ceremony and dedication of the new memorial stone at the Newton Abbot war memorial on January 29, which included a fly-past by a Hercules aircraft from RAF Lyneham, is on sale at the Newton Abbot Town Hall. Its price is £10, with £3.50 going towards the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. Barry Hunter and his wife Mary, of Kingskerswell, have been running Videos For All Occasions for more than 18 years and decided to produce a DVD of the dedication ceremony after reading about it in this newspaper's monthly RBL column. 'I contacted town council clerk Rod Tuck and got in touch with a few friends, because it could not be filmed using just two cameras,' he said. That is where Gordon Taylor, Dave Clifford, Frank Nichols and Maggie Sullivan, of the Teign Cine and Video Club, along with Atila Mustasa, came in. As well as at Queen Street and the war memorial, they had cameras at vantage points overlooking the town at Highweek Church, Knowles Hill and Wolborough Hill to capture the Hercules flying above the town. Mr Hunter has filmed an operation in Torbay Hospital so that the surgeon could use the video as a training aid for others. As well as the many weddings and other jobs, the couple have also been to Portugal to film a promotional DVD for Nicholas Travel, based in Paignton, and they are threequarters of the way through a promotional DVD for Broadway Home Improvements, Kingsteignton. l a photograph was wrongly captioned in our report on April 14 of the ceremony at the memorial stone to add the names of three servicemen who had died in the service of their country since 1945. The ceremony was in recognition of Sgt Brian Boyatt (Royal Air Force), Capt Victor Edgecumbe (Royal Engineers) and Flt Lt Anthony Wade (Royal Air Force). Our photograph (reproduced in the next column) shows members of the Edgecumbe family, not the Boyatt family as previously stated due to inaccurate information received. We apologise to both families.
ASHBURTON – Members and friends of the branch put their best foot forward on Sunday, St George's Day, when they took part in their Pen (sioners) Tor walk on Dartmoor. Setting off from Haytor the participants climbed Saddle Tor, Rippon Tor, Top Tor and finished at Hound Tor. Giving the walkers her support at one of the road crossing points was the portreeve of Ashburton, Janet Drake. The Ashburton charity shop Brainwave decorated its window to support the Pen Tors. The walk was organised to raise funds for the RBL Poppy Appeal and it is estimated that around £700 will be achieved – all the donations have not yet been collected. Poppy Appeal organiser Maurice Mann, who took part, thanked the charity shop, the participants and all those who gave their support.
NEWTON ABBOT – On April 10 members of the branch, the Royal Naval Association and the town council – including the mayor Cllr Ken Lewis and deputy mayor Cllr Daphne Watts – visited Teignbridge's adopted ship, HMS Triumph, in Devonport. They went around the Royal Naval Heritage Centre, the RN Museum, and another building with the figureheads of old sailing ships. With the submarine HMS Triumph undergoing a refit, the party toured HMS Spartan before having lunch in the officers mess. In August, sailors from HMS Triumph will visit Newton Abbot for a cricket match at the Recreational Trust Centre, which will be followed by a social evening in the RBL club. The annual challenge skittles match at the club for the RNA/RBL shield last week, was won by the RBL with David Cairns finishing top score in the five-legs match, scoring 15 and 16 spares in his total. On a sad note the death occurred earlier this month of Fred Sharrem, a trustee of the branch. He became a trustee when the club was in Wolborough Street, a position he held for some 20 years. Mr Sharrem, who lived in Wolborough Street and originally worked for the gas board, was on the branch committee for many years. The funeral is at Torquay Crematorium at 11.30am on Tuesday. On Sunday, a party from the branch is attending the annual service around the Sherman tank at Slapton, in memory of those who lost their lives in Exercise Tiger. They will include branch president Henry Hill, who will also carry the Newton Abbot RBL standard. Many American servicemen were killed in Exercise Tiger while they trained on Slapton Sands for the D Day Landings, and were hit when German E-Boats torpedoed their landing craft. On Tuesday, there is a social night at the club with members of 1322 (Newton Abbot) Squadron Air Training Corps, and on Saturday, May 13, members of Dawlish RBL will be visiting for a social evening. The popular annual train trip on the South Devon Railway from Buckfastleigh-Totnes, will be at 7pm on Tuesday, June 13. All profits will go to the RBL Poppy Appeal. Forthcoming entertainment in the club: tomorrow – After Dark. Saturday, May 6 – Scott. Saturday, May 20 – The Wanderer, Disco Time. One black mark for the branch – several people in the town have commented that the union jack was not flying outside the club on Friday, to mark the Queen's 80th birthday.
