RESIDENTS with a sea view at Teignmouth say they are becoming increasingly frustrated at plans to move recycling bins back to almost the same place where they had managed to get them moved from.

The group of around 16 people in Dawlish Road thought they had won their fight to get the ‘unsightly’ bins moved in Eastcliff Car Park back in 2016.

Shirley McLellan, who lives in Dawlish Road opposite the car park, said: ‘We don’t want people to lose their recycling bins in the car park, we just want them moved so they are not such an eyesore from our homes.’

She said that when The Cave building was removed from the centre of the car park the recycling bins were in full view of their homes.

The problem was when they became full or when people left general rubbish there.

‘It was a real problem because not only did they look awful the rubbish would blow about and some of it would come into our gardens. There are all sorts of things like face masks and even babies’ nappies left there.’

‘We thought we had sorted this out in 2016 when Teignbridge Council agreed to move them from the centre of the car park down to the side of the car park next to the church.’

They had been told the move would free up more parking space in Eastcliff, but Mrs McLellan disputed this saying there would be exactly the same space available wherever the bins had been placed.

‘We are just frustrated because we thought we had come to a suitable solution and now we can’t seem to get any answers from the council but we have been told they will be moved back to the original place in the middle of the car park,’ she said.

Guy Hawkins, who owns the Coach House, said: ‘Moving them back there doesn’t really make any sense. The Coach House is a holiday let and people staying there for the short while we were able to let it before Christmas complained several times about the noise from the bottle bank as every bottle going in seems to smash.

‘Someone seemed to use it every 15 minutes or so.’

The proposed location would put the bins little more than a car park space away, whereas if the bins were put in the former site further down the car park they would only be close to the church building and railway.

He understood it might be an attempt to create a bit more parking space but didn’t think this would make much difference. He was also concerned about lorries emptying the bins so close to other parked cars if they were moved to the proposed location.

A spokesman for Teignbridge Council said: ‘The recycling banks have been in a temporary location next to the bus bays since October and will be moved further into the car park in the coming weeks.

‘Our twin aim is to maximise the number of parking spaces to support Brunswick Street redevelopment and to locate the recycling bins in the safest and most accessible position, minimising as far as possible any noise nuisance.’
