A STRONG wind was blowing against the competitors in the annual Barham Cup rowing race from the river beach, Teignmouth, to Newton Abbot Town Quay on Saturday, but the rowers battled the choppy conditions in true British fashion.,Along the course along the Teign estuary, the competitors swap crews at Coombe Cellars – roughly the halfway point.,Crossing the line first and taking the Barham Cup were Alex Darkin, Andy Darkin, Patrick Gaskin and Rupert Holliday, who doubled up by taking the men's pairs. Andy and Patrick were runners-up in the Barham Cup last year.,Also making it a double were Simon Hounsell and Graham Hill, who took the Newton Town Cup and were winners of the men's singles.,Amanda Edworthy and Tommy Stoyle teamed up for success in the mixed singles – Tommy was in the winning Barham Cup team in 2010.,Though he did not register in the race itself, Tom Free rowed the course single handed to raise money for Cancer Research UK, particularly aimed at testicular cancer (lymphoma).,The 20-year-old support worker did the row in memory of Richard 'Dick' Petherick, a former mayor of Teignmouth who died from cancer in 2006, and loved watching the Barham Cup. Tom should know how much he raised in sponsorship early next week.,At Newton Abbot Town Quay there were canoe displays and the evening was rounded off by a barbecue and music.,
