THE plight of Shaldon Primary School's long-awaited extension scheme is to be put to the county council's executive on Monday, writes Hannah Taylor.

Headteacher Frances Moule and chairman of governors Leon Winston are to travel to County Hall to call on councillors to make the scheme a top priority for next year's capital programme.

The extension has been tipped as a high priority for 2007-8, but that is subject to an ongoing review of priorities.

Mrs Moule said: 'This is an opportunity for us to tell councillors directly why this is of high priority.

'Myself and the governors have worked tirelessly on this scheme and we are hoping that they will hear our case for the work to go ahead this year,' she said.

Mrs Moule said that the current situation of having children walking along a busy road did not meet government targets of ensuring the safety and welfare of children at school.

If it goes ahead, the new two-storey building will be located on the main school premises with provision for limited parking, a disabled bay and deliveries.

The extension will be linked to the existing school building by a covered walkway, and it will house a multi-purpose hall, two new classrooms, a reception area and two offices for the headteacher and administrative staff.

County councillor for Teign Estuary, David Cox, will also speak to the committee.

'We have come so far and it would be disastrous if it the project does not start next year. I want to make sure that Shaldon is number one on Devon County's priority list.'
