PLANNED work to replace a gas main in Teignmouth has been delayed for up to six weeks.

The £53,000 Transco project to renew 100 metres of piping at Bitton Park Road was due to start in the second week of February.

It is now due to start from mid-to-late March as Caroline Johnston of Transco explained.

She said: 'The start of the work has been delayed five or six weeks because of unforeseen circumstances.

'There is a need for specialist equipment that has to be obtained from a contractor.

'It wasn't available at the original start time. But the project is still going ahead and is now planned for March.'

The work is due to last five weeks and will involve traffic diversions.

The project will be carried out in two phases: phase one will involve two-way traffic lights at Bitton Park for the first two weeks.

Phase two will involve three-way traffic lights at the Shaldon Bridge junction and the closure of Mill Lane.

Traffic will be diverted down Coombe Park Road, Fourth Avenue, Mill Lane, Lower Kingsdown Road and Kingsway.

Graham Jeffrey, Transco project manager, said sorry to motorists.

He said: 'We would like to apologise for any inconvenience this essential safety work may cause.

'We will be working weekends and evenings to complete the work as quickly as possible.'
