A C DAY, of Ferndale Road, Teignmouth, writes:
Your headline on the story that skate park objectors should be ashamed gives emphasis to a minority-voted councillor.
It needs to be illuminated that the councillor in question may be a member of the controlling Liberal/Democrat group on both Teignmouth and Teignbrige councils but they wield their power by dint of the votes of only some 20 per cent of the community.
When he says 'the majority', he refers to his party's political majority, which allows them to 'carry' decisions, but does not relieve him personally of the duty to represent the interests of the non-vociferous majority of tax paying citizens.
Indeed, I am aware that my opinion is only important at election time but, having survived some 80 odd years, I do not enjoy being told 'I should be ashamed of myself' by someone elected to office and with access to acquiescent publicity.
Certainly if we can afford it, build a skate park for the young men. They are a minority group, mostly male, but they need somewhere to let off steam.
Why on the earth the Lib/Dem's political desire to impose this particular site on the town?
Teignmouth is already a magnificent town for young people to grow up in, and there are other, more appropriate, sites possible.
And there's the enigma for me.
Am I to believe that Teignnouth is not an exceptionally beautiful, natural, national treasure? That that is not the reason regular visitors come? That the proposed site is not a major and essential part of the natural vista? That a skate park would enhance the Regency arca of the Den as a whole?
I think not.
But may I suggest a referendum?
