Residents and visitors are being warned to stay away from beaches, cliffs and exposed sea fronts as high winds from Storm Goretti are set to create hazardous conditions along the Teignbridge coast.
The Met Office has issued a yellow wind warning across the region from 3pm this afternoon until 8am tomorrow (Friday January 9).
‘The sea can be dangerously unpredictable,’ a spokesperson from Teignmouth Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI) said. ‘If in doubt, don’t go out.’
High winds can cause injuries or pose a danger to life with flying debris and waves can be larger than expected and surfaces slippery.
‘Never risk your life for photos or videos as strong gusts or surprise waves can knock you off your feet,’ added a spokesperson for the RNLI Lifeguards for South and East Devon. The RNLI Lifeguards have urged owners to secure boats, boards and watersports equipment ahead of the storm.
The National Coastwatch Institution (NCI) has also advised people to ‘take extra care if you’re at the coast during the coming days’.
If you see someone in trouble, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard immediately.
