Stover's Palairet team just failed to reach the final at a gloriously sunny Yelverton on Sunday.

Up against a strong Exeter side, the first pairing of Jason Hampton and Matt Lyne lost 3&2, with their opponents two under par.

The second game went to the 17th, where Tom Mitchell and Richard Badcock failed to get up and down to lose 2&1.

Jon Jones and Steve Allen fought back from four down at one stage to get to all square, but could not keep the momentum going and lost 4&2.

Alan Hewings and Dan Parkes were comfortable 4&3 winners in their game, and the final pairing of Dave Henson and Dan Hall were two up with four to play when it was agreed to call the game a half with the match result already decided.

In the afternoon, Stover played the other losing semi-finalists, Libbaton, this time triumphing by 3-2. The winning pairings were Jason Hampton and Matt Lyne 2&1, Andy Rich and Richard Badcock 2&1 and Jon Jones and Steve Allen 2up.

In the final, Exeter beat Staddon Heights 3-2.

l A total of 114 members braved heavy showers on Saturday to compete for Stover's Jubilee Cups.

The early starters would argue they had the worst of the weather, but a cloud-burst mid-afternoon seemed to make it a more level playing field.

Even so, the majority of the prize winners played later in the day, with the winner of the scratch cup being Jason Hampton once again. His gross round of 69 was two better than Tom Mitchell, who took second place on countback from Chris Honeywill.

The handicap cup was won with a net 67 by Rob Phillips (h'cap 11). It was a welcome return to form for Phillips as he admitted he had not been playing well for the last few weeks.

The top four places in division one were decided on countback, all returning net 67s. Mark Hughes (h'cap 11) took second place with Andrew Cowell (11) third and Dan Hall (five) fourth.

Hall had been two under after nine holes but could not maintain his form over the back nine, although he did have three twos on his card.

Division two was won by Howard Veale (h'cap 15) – also with a net 67 – on countback from Andrew Prudden (17), with Phil Daley (15) third with net 68.

There were 22 twos carded, each worth five balls.

l Stover's Dermid MacDonald Cup was played for in conjunction with the Wednesday stableford, with 88 entrants.

Once again a score of par or better was hard to come by, with only six players managing to achieve it.

Ray Evans (h'cap 13) returned the best of the day 40 points to win the cup and a reduction in handicap. Second in division one was Jack Johnson (seven) with 39, followed by Dan Hall (five) 37 and club captain Neil Hayman (seven) 36.

Division two was won by John Payne (h'cap 21) with 38 points, from Roy Little (27) 37 and Iain MacDonald-Smith (26) with 35.FULL STORY IN OUR ONLINE EDITION
