COOMBESHEAD Academy was transported back to the swinging ’60s with an impressive production of award-winning musical Hairspray.
A school spokesman said: ‘Students worked incredibly hard this academic year to produce a spectacular version of the Tony Award-winning musical which has captivated audiences for generations.
‘Following the trend of industry-standard productions of Oliver! and We Will Rock You, Coombeshead was transported into the swinging ’60s where lovable plus-size teen Tracy Turnblad, played by Emma Marshall, has only one desire – to dance on the Corny Collins Show. When her dream becomes reality, Tracy is transformed from social flop to teen idol.
‘Using her new found fame she needs to dethrone reigning Teen Queen, win the heart of heartthrob Link Larkin and integrate a whole community, all without messing up her hair!
The impressive cast included students from across every year group. Headteacher Andrew Hulbert said: ‘The Coombeshead Academy productions will always be a highlight of the school calendar. The incredible talent and endeavour shown by the students involved is something that everyone should be extremely proud of.’
Matthew Shanks, executive headteacher of Templer Academy, added: ‘The performance was a result of many, many hours’ hard work from both staff and students alike.
‘The school production is a real team effort and an opportunity for students to showcase their talents and we are fortunate that we have so many talented singers, actors, dancers, musicians, costume makers and set designers.’
