TOTNES is staging an Olympic super-teams event to coincide with the games torch passing through the town on Sunday, May 20. The Olympic flame will be heading for Totnes on the second day of its travels on the road to London. To celebrate and get everyone in the mood, Tone Leisure, Totnes and District Swimming Pool and the Army Cadet Centre at Borough Park are holding a special sporting challenge for all ages. There will be eight fun events for mixed teams of five based around the Olympic theme. Events will include swimming; high jump; a standing long jump; a sports hall sprint; a rowing challenge; an indoor javelin challenge; and a 22 calibre shoot at the cadet centre range. The day will end with an all-family relay on the park, grasping an Olympic torch baton created by children on Tone activities holidays. The winning team will receive a trophy and Totnes pavilion and pool membership vouchers. Kevin Teague, centre manager for Tone, said: 'Our Olympic super-teams event is limited to 14 teams and we would encourage families to get their entry forms in early.' The start time of 9am is planned to allow plenty of time for the participants to complete all the challenges before walking to a suitable viewpoint on Station Road to cheer the torch through the town.
