A FEEDER rank system for Teignmouth town centre cabbies is set to be re-introduced.

Station Road has often been congested with up to 14 taxis waiting to go on to the official rank, and there have been complaints about parking on the pavement and obstructing traffic.

Now the authorities are about to revert to allowing up to five cabs to wait in little used Court Road – between Station Road and Hollands Road – for places on the rank to become available.

Drivers will not be allowed to leave their vehicles, the town council heard.

Some members queried whether so many taxis were needed in Teignmouth, and the town clerk, Dave Tickell, pointed out it was all down to deregulation, which meant there were no longer any limits on vehicles.

Cllr June Green was also concerned about potential obstruction to premises in the little street.

Councillors agreed that the feeder rank was better than the existing congestion, but it was also mentioned that the nearby station car park would make an ideal reserve taxi rank.

Obtaining permission from Network Rail, however, might be a problem.
