THE millions of servicemen and women who made the supreme sacrifice in two world wars and ongoing conflicts will be in the thoughts of those attending remembrance services in towns and villages throughout Teignbridge on Sunday.

It is particularly poignant this weekend for when young and old bow their heads in silence at 11am, it will be 94 years to the minute that the Great War came to an end.

The armistice was announced at 11am on November 11, 1918, bringing to an end a war that had begun on July 28, 1914. It was a victory – but the cost in lives was devastating.

The year 1939 saw the outbreak of the second world war which raged until May 1945 with an enormous toll of life.

We are still losing so many brave servicemen and women in Afghanistan.

All those who have given their lives for their country should never be forgotten and on Sunday they will be remembered.

IN Ashburton on Monday the town held its annual tradition of placing poppy crosses in the Field of Remembrance at St Andrew's Parish Church, at a short service led by the Rev John Andrews.
