THE decorated Teignmouth sailor who was one of the heroes of a celebrated naval action is to be finally honoured by his home town.,Jack French was the telegraphist on the frigate HMS Amethyst which was bombarded and blocked into a Chinese river by communist nationalists in 1949.,The story of the ship's dramatic and dangerous break for freedom under heavy fire was immortalised in the film Yangtze Incident starring Richard Todd, with Mr French, who died in May aged 84, being portrayed by well known character actor Ray Jackson.,Now a boat is to be dedicated to him and the famous break-out. Members of the Royal Naval Association at Newton Abbot have restored an old admiralty sailing craft, which will be called Amethyst, and fixed with a brass plate inscribed with his name.,It will be moored in Teignmouth to be used by children and young adults.,The plaque will be unveiled by his surviving brother Tony French, 82, who also served in the Royal Navy, and the naming of the craft performed by Roy Butler, 80, who was on board HMS Concord, the destroyer that went to the aid of HMS Amethyst and escorted her to freedom. He has been helping to restore the yacht.,The ceremony will take place on Saturday, July 30, and followed by an evening showing at the Teignmouth Community School of the Yangtze Incident.,Mr French was awarded a DSM and his family moved to Ashburton after the war. He went on to use his skills at GCHQ, the government signal intelligence monitoring base at Cheltenham.
