The festive period in Newton Abbot officially kicks off tomorrow with the Christmas lights switch on, writes Dawn Ellis.

The Mid-Devon Advertiser series' Young Hero will take a ride through Courtenay Street in Santa's sleigh with Bethanie Guest, the town's carnival queen, at 5pm.

Newton Abbot mayor Cllr David Howe will lead the procession of dignitaries and, once at the tower, the Mid-Devon Advertiser series' Young Hero will then do the honour of turning on the sparkling lights at 5.30pm.

Throughout the day there will be a variety of activities to entertain young and old.

Anderton and Rowland's fair makes a welcome return to the town, with three rides being set up at the pedestrianised quarter next to the Clock Tower.

Youngsters can enjoy the Mystery Boot funhouse or can try out driving around a racetrack, while thrill seekers can sit tight on Twister.

'This fair company has a long history with the town and it's good to have them back,' said Sally Henley, town centre manager.

Radio Coombeshead will broadcast from a stage at the Clock Tower from 11am.

The station, which is based at Coombeshead College, Newton Abbot, will present shows with a host of DJs. There will also be music and dance acts to wow the crowds.

Expect to see the likes of Alice Jemima and a Michael Jackson tribute dance troupe.

Circus-themed events will also be prominent in the town centre.

Performers will amaze audiences with illusions, juggling and by creating balloon models. Face-painting will also be available.

Shoppers can also see Spectrum Orchestra, who will be performing some festive tracks, and Al Marconi, a popular Spanish flamenco guitarist.

There is also a chance to win a Marks & Spencer hamper – entry forms are available from Frames and Boxes, Bank Street.

Local businesses have also got involved. Intek mobile phone store will be giving away mince pies, and children can go along and meet Woody Bear at Woods Estate Agents.

'It will be a really good family day,' said Ms Henley.

'We hope people will turn up and and help the town celebrate Christmas.

'We'd like to thank all those involved in organising the day, and PBS Contract Scaffolding for providing the staging for the light switch on.'
