British Transport Police have said they are not treating the death of a woman struck by a train in Newton Abbot as suspicious.

Officers went to a stretch of line near the town's station at 10.19pm on Thursday, January 26, after a report of an incident.

A spokesman said paramedics had joined them at the scene where the woman was breathing but suffering from severe head injuries and underneath the train.

Medics provided treatment before transferring the woman to Torbay Hospital, where she died early hours on Friday.

Officers are working to establish the woman's identity and inform her next of kin. A file will be prepared for the coroner.

The train was the 9.22pm Exeter Central to Paignton service.
