REINSTATING the storm-battered Dawlish railway line is likely to cost up to £15 million, it has been revealed.

Network Rail has set aside that amount, although the exact figure will not be known until the entire project has been completed.

The first passsenger train to use the newly restored coastal line through Dawlish ran through at 6.10am today.

An official VIP train to stop at the station, carrying dignitaries which it is hoped will include the Prime Minister David Cameron, will arrive around 9.30am.

Among the known VIPs to be aboard the Dawlish special are Mark Carne, chief executive of Network Rail; Patrick Hallgate, route managing director, Network Rail Western; Andy Cooper, managing director, Arriva Cross Country; and Mark Hopwood, managing director, First Great Western.

Exact details and timings are to be confirmed
