A GROUP of travellers encamped at a Newton Abbot park have been given verbal notice to leave by the council.

A video posted to the Spotted Newton Abbot page on Facebook captures the moment vehicles towing caravans drive into Baker’s park.

The video, which has been viewed more than 60,000 times, shows the group entering the park via the locked gate, which appears to be either cut or otherwise broken allowing access.

The group of at least half a dozen arrived yesterday evening, Thursday, June 5.

‘We have visited the site this morning to give verbal notice to leave, which is the first stage of the legal process’ a spokesperson for Teignbridge District Council said.

Teignbridge were due to close five parking spaces at the Newton Abbot park from today, Friday, June 6, to allow them to fix a retaining wall.

It is not clear if the newly sprung-up encampment will affect this.
