A BID to restore ancient woodland on Dartmoor is to be given a welcome boost by a tree-loving Newton Abbot business woman.

Molly Robertson, owner of Bank Street shop Frames and Boxes, is organising a Give a Tree Back family fun day to raise funds for conservation charity the Woodland Trust.

The trust wants to use the money to restore Houndtor Wood in the Bovey Valley to its former glory.

Dense stands of non-native conifer trees planted 40 years ago will be replaced with native broadleaf trees that support a wide section of wildlife.

Mrs Robertson is organising the charity event as part of a project for a personal development course, Landmark Education.

Mrs Robertson said: 'I have always loved trees. We need them to breathe and to bring beauty back into our lives.

'I worry that we are not doing enough to look after our trees and woods and we need to give back, not just take away.

'This is an opportunity for the community to get together and do something for the community. It's a marvellous chance to restore an ancient woodland for the benefit of future generations.

'I can't wait for the baby trees to arrive. it's so exciting and I'm delighted that everyone I speak to wants to be part of this project.'

The fun event, supported by local companies, entertainment and community groups, is being held on Sunday, June 29, in Courtenay park, Newton Abbot.
