There is more good news for Buckfastleigh Primary School which has been awarded Healthy School status and graded good in all four areas of management, ethos, care and teaching and learning. The school ran into trouble in 2006 when education inspectors said too many aspects of its performance were failing and it was placed under special measures.Since then new headteacher Nick Banwell has turned the ship around, Ofsted inspectors saying in January 2008 that sufficient progress had been made to lift the order. The latest good news has been greeted with modesty by Mr Banwell who paid tribute to parents and colleagues. 'We are delighted that our efforts are recognised. It values the efforts of the whole school community towards creating healthy and happy children and young people, who do better in learning and in life,' he said. 'To achieve healthy school status, schools must be successful in 62 separate criteria. These include a focus on healthy eating, physical activity, emotional health and well-being, and reducing the misuse of drugs. 'The award also focuses on safety, improving the environment, citizenship and safer travel to schools.'
