The boilers are firing up for a balmy 27-degree swim at Buckfastleigh Open Air Swimming Pool this Boxing Day.

For the first time the community pool is heating up its waters for a festive swim session this year.

Pam Barrett, chairman of the trustees who run the pool, said: ‘It’ll be all steaming and glorious and the same temperature as the Caribbean Sea. There’ll be sessions for kids, families and more serious swimmers.’

The pool will be open from 11am to 5pm with a family session, including toys and inflatables, from midday to 2pm.

The pool will also be open on Christmas Eve morning, from 9.30am to 10.30am, for the usual Saturday cold water winter swim session, although the water is likely to be a fair bit warmer than usual.

Pam added: ‘We’re firing up the boilers right now for our fully heated Boxing Day swim so on Saturday the water temperature should be well above the usual nine or ten degrees. It may even be up in the high teens or even 20.

‘So, if you’re sheltering from the storms or just fancy a bit of warmth at Christmas, join us at the pool.’
