ENGINEERS from Wales and West Utilities are working on plans to rectify problems following work carried out in the Triangle in Teignmouth.

Town councillors were horrified by the state of the paving after contractors completed gas works in the area.

Now, Wales and West says it has had a ‘multiple’ discussions with officers from Devon County Council highways and site visits to look at the problems. It appears some of the kiln dried sand may have washed out and replacement sand is due to be brushed in imminently.

Meanwhile some of the block paving was damaged during excavation work.

Wales and West needs to source up to 70 blocks to replace those damaged but as they are not readily available ‘off the shelf’ they may have to be specially made.

Both Wales and West and Devon Highways have confirmed the work will be carried out when the summer holiday season has ended.

Town councillors were furious after the area was left in what they said was an ‘unacceptable’ state.

Following the town council’s complaints, Wales & West Utilities Programme Controller for Teignmouth, Roxanne Whittaker, said: ‘We are aware of an issue regarding the completion of reinstatement work carried out by contractors working on our behalf in The Triangle area of Teignmouth.

‘We had previously worked in the area to upgrade the gas network.

‘We are working with Devon County Council to address the issues raised and will agree with them on an appropriate time to carry out any further work that minimises any potential disruption.’

A Devon County Council spokesperson said: ‘We regularly inspect work carried out on the public highway by utility companies and in this instance a number of issues have been found with recent gas work in the Triangle in Teignmouth.

‘We have held initial discussions with Wales and West Utilities to resolve these issues, and they have agreed to carry out remedial work at a time to be agreed.’
