WHAT'S the weather like in Teignmouth today?Soon, potential holidaymakers will be able to find out instantly if it is sunny or raining, on their computer, writes John Ware. The resort is all set to become one of the first in the region to have its own on-line weather station, updated every few seconds. At the touch of a few buttons, it will be possible to find out the temperature, the sun strength, rainfall, humidity, wind direction and speed, and a host of other meteorological details. The town council is seriously considering signing up to a scheme that will feed all the information from a local weather station via a wireless link to the town website.Town clerk Dave Tickell told a town council meeting that the statistics would be updated every 20 seconds, and the cost of the hard and soft ware would be about £400.Most members believed it would be a big boost to tourism, because visitors thinking of coming down would know exactly what the weather situation was. There was some apprehension that if it was raining, it might put people off coming, and the mayor, Cllr Vince Fusco, warned: 'It could work both ways.'But Cllr Terry Falcao declared: 'I support anything that brings more people to Teignmouth. 'We are not getting the numbers of holidaymakers we should be, especially as more people are taking breaks in this country at the moment because of the economic situation and the fall in value of the pound abroad.'We have got to do something to promote the town. There are plenty of five-day forecasts, but an up to the moment check on the weather has got to be beneficial. 'We should not be worried about our weather, which has some of the best sunshine records in the country.'Cllr Ian Parkes added: 'There are lots of things to do locally, even if it is raining, and we should be highlighting that. The weather is not the be all and end all.'We should aim for an award winning website to get people here.'Cllr David Weekes swiped at the town's website, which he described as 'crap'. It needed totally revamping, with a lot more information included.Mr Tickell assured him they were in the process of improving and upgrading the site.
