TEAMS from three Newton Abbot schools presented subjects from video games to looking after their feet at the town’s Rotary Club Youth Speaks competition.

The students from Coombeshead Academy, Stover School and Newton Abbot College picked a subject to present to the Newton Abbot Rotarian Club judges.

The winning intermediate team, aged 11 to 13, from Stover School, made up of Sammy Ingham, Jess Powis and Alexia Costache, spoke about how children should eat less junk food and exercise more.

The winning senior team, aged 14 to 17 years, came from Coombeshead Academy. That team, with Ethan Pearce, Jake Corbett and Victoria Witt, chose the subject Pandemonium Pandemic.

Both winning teams will go forward to the next south west peninsular heat in the new year.

The judges were Newton Abbot Rotarians, Lynn McElheron, Robert Thompson and Anthony Johnson and the inquisitor, for the third year running, was Roger Kirk, former principal of Dawlish Community College and co-founder of The Helen Foundation.

Rotary Club Newton Abbot President Martin Smith presented certificates and commemorative mugs to all the competitors, and a trophy to both winning teams.

Martin said: ‘This Rotary led competition is growing year on year, and is a great opportunity for youngsters to experience public speaking and demonstrate presentation skills. It can only serve them good for their future.

‘Thanks to the teachers for supporting the children and giving advice; the judges; Roger Kirk; the MC Rotarian Paul Haigney; and time keeper Rotarian David Griggs; and a special thanks to Rotarian Jacky Bennett who organised the event.’
