CROWNING THE CARNIVAL QUEEN

As both the attendants were at work, the Crowning could not take place until the evening. Mr. Bill Holmes, president of the Teignmouth Rotary Club, did the honours, and Julie Philips was crowned, attended by Carolyn Hook and Linda Welsh. The Junior Princess, however, was duly crowned by Mr. Graham Bond, Chairman of the Teignmouth and District Round Table, at the usual mid-afternoon event, watched by Julie Philips. The Princess, Miss Alison Roy-Fuller and attendants Miss Samantha Sessions and Miss Jane Smith all received gifs.

NO SPEED LIMIT

Neither the Town Council nor the police would support a speed restriction in Shaldon as it was not justified. Mrs. Arnot commented “The police don’t come to Shaldon except at closing time, so they don’t know anything about the traffic problem”.

YACHTING GRANT WITHDRAWN

The Royal Yachting Association has rejected an order from the Government to cancel next month’s international Yacht Racing Union World Racing World Youth Sailing Championships at Inverclyde, even though it might cost them the £15,000 grant the Government has withdrawn. Entries from 22 countries were received, but there was pressure from the Government, when it was learned that South Africa’s entry had been accepted.

SEEDSMEN'S SITE

There has been keen interest in South Devon in the efforts of the famous Reading seed firm Suttons to get a site near Torquay. Torbay Planning Committee has approved detailed planning proposals for their 66,000 square feet, packaging and processing building, measuring about 100 yards by 70 yards, with parking for 130 cars.MISSING BOTTLESEvery day of the year, well over a million milk bottles are lost, at a cost to the dairy industry of about £11 million per year. Many of the lost bottles will be dumped, upsetting the delivery of milk because there are not enough bottles to maintain a perpetual cycle of washing, filling and daily delivery, and collecting the empties to start the cycle again.

ORGAN OVERHAULED

Last Sunday at the United Reformed Church, members welcomed the return of the organ after a six-week overhaul.

GOLD MEDAL FOR NURSE

Nursing awards were presented at Torbay Hospital last Wednesday by Miss Eve Bendal, Registrar of the General Nursing Council. The gold medal for the best pupil nurse was awarded to Miss Christine Ironside, of Teignmouth.

“CRACKERJACK”

At the opening of the Shaldon and District Horticultural show, the vice-chairman Miss B. Parham said she was standing in for the Chairman, Miss E. M. Williams, because she had taken on the catering for the two days. The actual opening was performed by Miss Jan Hunt, appearing in the stage show “Move Over Mrs. Markham” at the Torbay Pavilion Theatre with Tessie O”Shea (nicknamed “Two-Ton Tessie O”Shea”), and well-known in TV”s “Crackerjack”.
