OPEN GOVERNMENT
Teignmouth Town Council are to try an experiment in more open government, with “surgeries”, known as Council Consultations - held for members of the public after each council meeting. The “surgery” will be held at 8.00pm following the council meetings, the first on Tuesday, October 21. It was further agreed that Teignmouth representatives on the Teignmouth District Council be invited to attend, and from the local County Council.
Mr. Arhur Bladon said that people did not seem able to get correct information about Council matters, more than ever before because the rates had got so high. They should now allocate an evening when councillors should be available to answer questions.
RURAL BUS SERVICES
Comprehensive surveys are needed to find ways of improving public transport for the rural areas of Devon poorly served, or without buses at all. The first should look at the transport needs of the Teign Valley and the Little Dart Valley. In some cases, it might be necessary to provide financial support while the experiment gets under way.
CHESS
Chess players have an opportunity to play against a Master today, at the London Hotel at 6.30pm with Robert G. Wade, twice British champion, with play on up to 30 boards simultaneously. Mr. E. Card, Town Mayor, will make the first move.
PROTECTING OUR FARMLAND
Protecting Devon’s rolling farmland and beautiful landscape is a matter of overwhelming concern to the Devonian man-in-the-street, the results of a questionnaire distributed by Devon County Council.
More than 95% of the 1617 forms returned classed the safeguarding from “temporary abuse or permanent misuse” as a matter of “very urgent’ or “important”; a 90% demand for the protection of the scenic landscape be given the same priorities.
WHITE RABBIT (from Women’s World)
We walked along the Promenade, just in time to see Mike Scott taking his white rabbit for its daily walk, after their performance at the Carlton Theatre. Both loved ice cream - and one of the memories of that summer is of Mike and his rabbit sitting on the sea wall eating ice cream.
SATURDAY POST (in Days Of Yore)
The Urban Council decided that local postmen should have a half day holiday on Saturdays, and there should be no afternoon deliveries on Saturdays. One member said “I find it inconvenient to have to wait for letters from Saturday morning to Monday morning”.
BOMB HOAX STOPS LESSONS
