Teignmouth School student Alex Moyse took Newquay’s Bradley McLellan’s unbeaten record in winning the South West Inter-Counties Championship over a gruelling hilly 3k course.

Running in a T-shirt against runners clad in seven different county vests, the 13-year-old was not even part of the Devon team.

Moyse’s dad had entered him as an individual with the hope that he might qualify as one of the first six finishers for April’s London Mini Marathon, run over the last three miles of the London Marathon course to keep the crowd entertained before the main event.

Last winter, Moyse finished fourth at the South West Schools’ Championship, with McLellan first, but revenge was to be sweet.
