CREDITON 1st XV 27 – 10 TEIGNMOUTH 1st XV

Teignmouth headed to Crediton in hopeful spirits on Saturday (November 22) having only lost their previous encounter by one point, scored in the closing seconds of the game.

As well as playing for league position, the Crediton v Teignmouth fixture sees the sides battling for the Geoff Warne Memorial Cup, which commemorates a former teacher, player and coach who had been a big part in the lives of players from both teams.

The game started evenly with both teams nearing the try line Crediton’s first foray over the line was held up and the game quickly swung to the opposite end of the pitch with Crediton defending a Teignmouth attack.

After several visits into opposition territory, Crediton broke the deadlock kicking a penalty in front of the posts after Teignmouth failed to roll away.

Crediton capitalised on Teignmouth’s ill-discipline, kicking a second penalty. A converted try just before half time, took Crediton to a 13-0 advantage at the break.

Teignmouth came back for the second half fighting and finally put points on the board through a Jack Mayne (12) penalty kick. But Crediton responded with a second converted bringing the score to 20-3.

After more indiscipline and a series of penalties Teignmouth were next to strike. A backs move off the back of a scrum saw centre Jack Mayne slipping through a gap in defence to score under the posts and then add a conversion.

Crediton responded with one more converted try before the final whistle and the final score of 27-10 saw the home side retain the Geoff Warne Memorial Trophy. The two sides will compete for the cup again on March 7 at Bitton Park.
