NEWTON Abbot RFC fell apart in the second half against Paignton, who crushed them 52-24 in the South Devon derby at Queen’s Park on Saturday, December 6.
The All Whites were all-square on 19-all after 40 minutes, but had their defence ransacked in the second half as Paignton ran riot.
Just to rub it in there were two tries in the match for Tom Osborn, who was a Newton Abbot youth player before moving on to New Cross and now Paignton.
Newton Abbot’s try scorers against Paignton were Jack Sealey, Alex Gale, Jake Monnington and Reuben Brinkley. Monnington landed two conversions.
Defeat leaves Newton Abbot in eighth, tied with seventh-placed Torquay Athletic on 22 points. The All Whites are five points clear of Penryn, who currently sit in the second relegation place.
Despite the inclement weather experienced in the days prior up and down the country, five of the six games in this division went ahead. St Ives’ visit to Barnstaple IIs was the only one to fall by the wayside.
Elsewhere, Kingsbridge enjoyed a notable victory away at Torquay, Redruth IIs and Truro won at home against Saltash and Penryn respectively and Wiveliscombe prevailed by a single point at Plymstock Oaks.
Newton will host Penryn this Saturday at Rackerhayes before visiting Plymstock Oaks on Saturday, December 20, their latest outing before the winter break.
Newton Abbot Spartans’ home clash with North Tawton was postponed, as was New Cross’ scheduled game away at Exeter Engineers, both in the Counties Three Devon North & East division.
Next up for the former is a meeting with Sidmouth IIs and for the latter, a journey to Taw Meadow to face North Tawton.
