ABBOTSKERSWELL defeated winless South Devon by six wickets on the way up to fourth in the table.

Josh Vicary (24) and Dan Yates (21) were second best to 34 extras in South Devon’s 141 all out.

Jay Hussain (4-9), Alfie Harrison (2-39) and Brayden Notman (2-20) were the bowlers who dismantled South Devon.

Tom Heath was the only Abbots’ batter to miss double figures in the 22.4 overs needed to win the game.

Hussain (26) made early progress, Notman (28) and Charlie Hill (29no) whittled the deficit down by 60 and Aron Owen (29no) was in at the end.

Next up, Abbots host Paignton 2nd XI and South Devon visit Plymouth 2nd XI.

Meanwhile, Jason Williams, Fraser Cowen and Dean Jefferey all ‘went large’ for Plymstock 2nd XI in their 214-run win over D West stragglers Abbotskerswell 2nd XI.

Opener Williams made 84 off 75 balls, Cowen rapped 87 off 55 and Jeffrey was 60 not out off 48 in a hefty total of 337 for eight.

Williams and Cowen put on 140 for the third wicket. Jeffrey (60) and Oli Birlson (31) added 82 more down the order.

Alex Troake’s three-wicket return for Abbots included Williams. His wickets cost 82 runs.

Abbots were soon in difficulties replying at 26 for four. Veteran Gary Caunter (20) teamed-up with Charlie Thomas (41no) for a face-saving fifth-wicket stand of 46 that stopped the traffic in and out of the pavilion.

Thomas was still there at the end for Abbots, whose last five wickets tumbled for one run scored in the space of six balls – the first three balls of which were a Fraser Cowen hat-trick.

Cowen (3-2) finished the job started by Ben Whalley (2-29 and a run-out), Williams and Matt White.

It was seamer Cowen’s first hat-trick in adult cricket.
