BOVEY Tracey’s Hem Chetri offered a glimpse of what opposing bowlers can expect with some elegant batting in the rain-ruined game against Budleigh Salterton.
Chetri, who plays across all three formats for Nagaland in the Ranji Trophy, signed in as Bovey’s overseas player with 48 not out from 49 balls in a total of 112 for three.
The wet and gloomy weather may not have been to the 25-year-old’s liking, but some of the Budleigh bowling was. Anything with width was stroked away – and anything short dispatched in a hurry.
Seb Ansley, the Bovey captain, said: “Hem and Reuben Stanley batted really nicely together.
“Playing through the rain was a good introduction to English cricketing conditions for Hem.”
Hugo Hughes (2-41), an overseas student at Exeter University, opened his Budleigh bowling account with the wickets of Bovey duo Jake Pascoe and Albie Bradley.
When Jack England snared Harry Mount lbw just as he was starting to play his shots, Bovey were 41 for three in the seventh over.
Chetri and Reuben Stanley (27) were the not-outers when rain forced the players off. Stanley’s leg-glance for four off Hughes was a contender for shot of the day.
Ed Doble, the Budleigh skipper, was pleased with the new-ball effort from England and Hughes.
“We made a nice start with the ball, picking up three wickets, before Bovey’s fourth-wicket partnership got set,” said Doble.
Match action was thin on the ground across the Tolchards Devon Cricket League in general, not a single Saturday afternoon game was played to a finish due to bad weather.
The division worst affected by rain was the D Division West, where just 25 overs were bowled in the three games that started.
Chagford’s away game at Ivybridge only lasted seven balls before the teams came off. The home side were three for one at the time.
Abbotskerswell 2nd XI reached 31 for three at Tavistock. Nick Guest (11) and Erik Gregersen (12) limped into double figures.
Yelverton were 37 for three halfway through the 10th over when they went off against Plymstock 2nd XI.
Meanwhile, Heathcoat 2nd XI batters Harry Pryce and Will Bucknell got in some useful match practice before their C Division East date with Teignmouth & Shaldon was called off.
Opener Tom Lock, who topped 750 league runs last season at an average in the 70s, missed out as he came and went in eight balls.
Pryce carried on at the other end to reach 63 off 55 balls with nine fours and three sixes along the way. He battered Morgan Couch out of the attack by biffing him for 20 in just two overs.
Josh Couch restored family pride by bowling Pryce to break a second-wicket stand of 108.
Bucknell – eight fours and a six – was unbeaten on 59 when the end arrived after 26 overs on 161 for two.
Teignmouth & Shaldon entertain Sandford 2nd XI in the next round of fixtures.
Finally, only two overs were bowled at Two Mile Oak before derby tussle between Abbotskerswell and Ipplepen met a soggy end.
Pens’ opener Marcus Gadie was 10 not out in his side’s total of 16 without loss.
South Devon were unable to get on the field against Cornwood 2nd XI due to lunchtime rain at Marsh Lane.
South Devon make the short trip to Chudleigh this Saturday afternoon. The Kate Brook side have not had any match time yet as they were rained off at Brixham.
