SEVERAL members of South Devon CTC went out to Mallorca for some mountain cycling, on a trip organised by Torbay Tri, and they weren’t disappointed.
On day one, they rode out to the famous lighthouse at Formentor before heading through the town of Alcudia on day two, along another peninsula to the steep climb to La Victoria.
At the end of the week, a number of people had signed up for a long ride from Andratx on the southwest of the island and along the coastal mountain ridge and back to Pollenca- one of Mallorca’s iconic rides.
It wasn’t all about their own cycling either with the weekend’s half ironman proving to be a great event to watch.
Meanwhile, a lot of the ladies in the CTC group had visited a bike shop and eyed some very fancy “Sa Calobra” cycling tops.
It was decided that in order to justify purchasing them, they would have to do the ride, but there were heavy thunderstorms forecast for the weekend.
Despite this, they set off with a few others very early on the Sunday morning and they made it safely to the bottom, as well as returning to the top before the thunderstorm began. Torrential rain accompanied them all the way back to the hotel, but everybody did really well and the tops were well-earned.
This climb is one of the ten top-rated in the world so it was no mean feat! Most riders completed over 250 miles each on the trip with another of the groups electing to do a 200km ride around the east of the island, meeting the same weather.
Other towns visited included Arta, Santanyi, Porte Christo, Muro, and Campanet.
On the final day there were social rides into Pollenca, but the storms returned to give some of the riders a final drenching. Despite the rain, it was a fantastic trip enjoyed by everybody, with no major mishaps.
