There are murmurs here and there about how and when we will see the return of grassroots football – but even in its absence, we’ve seen a change of management, writes Jamie Rooke.
Nick Milton’s reign at Newton Spurs was short-lived with the club announcing on social media that he ‘has had to step aside due to personal reasons, but is hoping to stay on at the club in some capacity.’
In his place we will see Adam Dyson and Chris Metters, both pictured, ascend into a dual player-manager role, the duo having been first-team players at the club for a number of years.
Club secretary and second-team player Jake Elms described the appointments as ‘the perfect opportunity for “Dys” to get back in the hot seat, along with “Metts” this time!’
One would like to think that their prestige in the local football circuit on the pitch could attract some strong talents.
In this lay-off of football, so many clubs up and down the country and up and down the football hierarchy are struggling to stay afloat.
But Elms spoke of how ‘the club has been very well looked after by The Rec, who have been very helpful and accommodating during this extremely difficult time.’
It could be months before we see Spurs back in action, but off the pitch action behind the scenes still rolls on.
The secretary added: ‘I can’t say I’m aware of additional backroom staff coming in, but Adam and Metts may well have something up their sleeves.’
The league system has been shook up recently with large changes occurring on a local scale.
Elms said that both players bring a ‘wealth of experience playing at this level’ and it will be interesting to see how they fare under the new settings.
With the duo both coming on board as player-managers, the question arises of how they will balance the two responsibilities.
‘I think that solely depends on who they’re able to bring in to bolster the squad,’ said Elms. ‘I imagine at least one will play, with the possibility of rotation on the cards to keep them both fresh minded for management duties.’
