Five Maverick Runners took part in the popular Torbay Half Marathon on Sunday and for one Maverick the completion of 13.1 miles along the sea front brought up the half-way point in a personal challenge.

Following the death of her mother to cancer in October, Hania Lee set herself the challenge to complete 10 half-marathons in 10 months to raise money for Rowcroft Hospice.

The Torbay Half was number five for her, but it was also a poignant one as Hania carried memories of last year’s event, where she took part in the fun run with her mum.

So far, she has raised more than £2,000, but hopes to add to this total as her challenge progresses.

Accompanying her in each half marathon, and during the long months of training, has been her Maverick Runner team-mate Jo Pammenter.

Although a popular race, the Torbay Half is also well known for being a tough course, with two laps of a loop from Paignton to Torquay Pavilions and back, taking in Torre Abbey.

Long dragging hills and exposed sections of sea front road make up the course, with energy levels taking a battering.

The summer weather also added to the difficulty, with the hot and humid conditions being exacerbated; added to this, a sharp head wind confronted the runners on the return section along the sea front, from Torquay to Paignton.

Martyn Ellis led the Mavericks home, taking 19 seconds off his time of last year after a strong second half of the race.

Also taking part were father and son duo of Andy and Luke Hard, with son Andy in front by just over half a minute.

Maverick positions and times: Martyn Ellis 1.26.16 for 48th place; Hania Lee 1.52.31 522nd; Jo Pammenter 1.56.14 644th; Andy Hard 2.00.32 817th and Luke Hard 2.01.09 843rd.

More than 2,000 people took part in the event.
