TIMED for the start of the school summer holidays, Newton Abbot's Family Fun Day tomorrow sees plenty of family-friendly entertainment to complement the six-race card, plus the bonus Rowcroft Hospice Mascot Race run 30 minutes before the first, writes David Hucker.
As well as the play park, entertainment includes face painting, inflatables and Hook A Duck with the first 200 children through the gates receiving a special giveaway. Gates open at 12:20pm and entry to the Course Enclosure costs £13 with children admitted free.
Sergeant Fury bids for a hat-trick in the opening Zero To Exit Handicap Hurdle and, although racing from a career-high handicap mark, could still be improving. Gore Point carries a 7lb penalty for his win over Sassified at the last meeting and, although the margin was only a neck, he came late on the scene that day and can follow up.
The Race Carl To The Bar Juvenile Hurdle sees Dignam, trained by Joseph O'Brien, making the crossing from Ireland.
A winner once from ten starts on the flat, Dignam finished fifth in a valuable handicap at the Curragh at the end of last month and runs here in preference to Killarney on Friday. Ridden by J J Slevin, he could have too much class for his rivals on his hurdling debut.
Amongst the opposition is Manyana Blue, who may have come up against two useful types when third on her debut here last month, and Lord, who makes his debut for trainer Olly Murphy after two runs in Germany.
The trip is three and a quarter miles for the Celebrating 50 Years Trading Dick Oliver Ltd Handicap Chase and trainer Evan Williams has chosen this for Backinaction, who was entered in six races over the weekend. Great d'Ange was beaten 57 lengths by Time To Bite over a shorter trip last Monday and preference is for My Girl Katie, who can confirm the form with Testflight from their run over course and distance earlier this month
The run of Gore Point in the opener will be a pointer as to the chances of Sassified in the Jack Challis Turns 12 Handicap Hurdle.
Although he has eleven opponents to beat, Sassified can go one better this time. Colonel Lesley was beaten a neck by Feel The Pinch last month and Stinginhisstep was a course winner in May, but beaten a long way on his last run behind Keel Strand. Karannelle is a regular at the course but doesn't win very often and Outback Frontiers is well-weighted on his form of last summer.
The longest race of the afternoon is the Brendon Soper Memorial Handicap Hurdle and, provided her stamina lasts out, this could go to Sam's Amour who won three times last season and should step up on her seasonal reappearance.
Another tackling the trip for the first time is Impecunious, who did well to make Keel Strand pull out all the stops earlier this month.
There's an open-looking field for the closing Stephen Hayes 'Jagger' Memorial Handicap Chase in which La Quarite bids to break his duck after 15 races, but Mersey Street, a winner over hurdles at Fakenham in January, can step up on his Worcester chasing debut.
