Two members of Newton Abbot Athletics Club – Tommy D'Cruz (left) and Seb Ford – both won gold medals in the U13 age group for Devon at the South West Inter Counties Championships.

Tommy, from Kingskerswell and who is a student at Newton Abbot College, won the 75-metre hurdles, with Seb finishing runner-up.

Seb, who attends Torquay Boys' Grammar School, won the high jump event.

The event, held at Exeter Arena, featured senior and junior athletes competing for Devon, Cornwall, Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire. There were also senior entrants from Ghana and Swaziland who were taking part to help them warm up for the Olympic Games which provided added interest for athletes and spectators.

Tommy and Seb are enjoying a successful season after both were selected for the Devon County U13 team who qualified for the Aviva National Indoor Championships, which took place in Birmingham, earlier this year.

They also became county champions in May at their respective events, with Tommy winning the combined events championship pentathlon for his age group.

Several other athletes from Torbay AC and Newton Abbot AC also produced solid performances at the south west championships.

Rachael Webb took silver in the 100m and was fourth in 200m for U15 girls; Matthew Birkett ran personal best times in the 200m and 1500m; Harry King took bronze in the 300m U15 boys; Graeme Tinkler was fourth in U17 men's 800m; and Lillian Goddard took bronze i­n the long jump for U15 girls.
